Louis you make a very good point, so I went back and corrected the wording to read “Deaf or Hearing Impaired”. As for the Hard of Hearing or People with Hearing Loss wording – sorry but that will not fly. Scientifically one’s hearing can be affected by many factors and can be temporarily or permanently affected or impaired. In fact being PC, one could make same argument about the word “Loss” as in they are less of a person, which I would vehemently disagree with.

I hope you have a great day

Good Morning Barry,
Thanks for the heads up on this, as I had not heard of states mandating this. The next article will be dealing with where to place the units and get into the code issues as well. I will make sure this issue is brought up in it. Thanks again

Combination units not only "may" be the best option but in some States it's required by code.

Here in Iowa the code was slated to be enforced last October, but due to lack of supply from the manufacturers it will now be enforced starting April 1st of this year. I know there are some other States considering or already reqiring the same code

Iowa code:
The law requires all newly constructed residential properties in the State of Iowa to be equipped with smoke detectors that have both photoelectric and ionization sensors. Existing homes do not need to have the detectors changed out if they meet the manufacturer’s recommendationsfor use, installation and life expectancy. However when it is time to replace smoke detectors in existing homes, they must be replaced with the dual-sensor (photoelectric and ionization) detectors. Once the dwelling is equipped with dual-sensor smoke alarms where required by code, single-station ionization or photoelectric smoke alarms may be installed in addition, separately.
